All the more periods are represented; significant of Italian military architecture, immersed in the green of the embankments and the wall.
Also studied by the great Michelangelo, as one of the most important examples; tall of military art, the red brick curtains testify to the important past of Ferrara and have become today, as was the case even then in times of peace, a large garden that integrates and expands the many other more & ugrave; small within the City.

Convenient equipped and cycle paths on the top; or at the base of the fortified walls they allow you to walk among the red of the stones and the green of the local essences, such as the lime tree, the plane tree, the horse chestnut, the oak, the acacia, interspersed with hedges of yew, ivy and box. This urban itinerary joins the cycling route & ldquo; Destra Po & rdquo; through the easy cycle link that from the urban park & ldquo; Giorgio Bassani & rdquo; crosses a stretch of countryside still intact on the outskirts of the city.

THE LANDS OF LUCREZIA

Route from Ferrara to Cento - approx. 42 km
From the Estense Castle, along via Bologna, left into via Putinati, through Borgo San Luca, you enter the countryside rich and intensely cultivated, where once the swamp reigned. At Torre Fossa, where a now disappeared fortification stood guarding the inland navigation, you turn towards San Martino where, after passing the elegant eighteenth-century parish church, you meet a crossroads, turn right and, after crossing the State Road 255, continue along via Navigazione.
On the right, among the orchards and farmhouses, the thirteenth-century Torre dell'Uccellino is visible, guarding the ancient border between Ferrara and Bologna. Then turn right into via Imperiale, a very long, almost straight artery that follows a border established at the beginning of the 16th century by an agreement signed between the Bolognese Senate and Duke Ercole I d'Este, and you will soon reach Poggio Renatico.
The main square is; dominated by the imposing neo-gothic church of San Michele, built in 1907. Not far away stands the Castello dei Lambertini (15th century & ndash; 17th century), already; belonging to the local feudal lords and now the seat of the Municipality.
In the direction of San Carlo, you cross a countryside dotted with "Bolognese" farmhouses, with a square plan with porticoed barns.
On the left & egrave; the green wall of the Rhine embankment is visible a few hundred meters from the road. After a few kilometers, turn left towards Chiesa Nuova and then right towards Sant'Agostino. Whoever wishes, can & ograve; continue for a few hundred meters up to the river bank, from the top of which dominate the neatly cultivated countryside on one side and the floodplain areas rich in woods on the other. The embankment, not being equipped for cycling, can; present some small difficulties, therefore & ograve; this variant & egrave; recommended for those who have the appropriate equipment.

FROM FERRARA TO ARGENTA AND CAMPOTTO D'ARGENTA

50 km approx
From the Estense Castle along Corso Porta Reno to Porta Paola, continue along via Bologna and, after the bridge over the Po di Volano, turn left into Via Putinati to Borgo San Luca, towards Torre Fossa.
On the far outskirts of the city you will find the Baroque Sanctuary of San Luca, with an ancient crucifix that tradition considers miraculous.
The road then winds tortuously along the ancient course of the Po di Primaro, through places whose names derive from their river location, such as Torre Fossa and Fossanova.
Near the town of Sant'Egidio the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine del Poggetto stands, a modest and graceful building that houses a venerated image of the Madonna.
Numerous stately homes of a certain value line the path up to Marrara, where you can visit the imposing parish church, with its pleasantly frescoed interior.
Crossing the nearby center of San Nicol & ograve ;, where it stands, in correspondence of a wide curve, the seventeenth-century Villa Pasi-Casazza, continue to S. Maria Codifiume and along the Po di Primaro.
Beyond the town of Bova, turn right at the intersection, and then immediately left to reach, after about 5 km, the river Reno.
This watercourse with a predominantly torrential regime, which for centuries was the cause of terrible floods mainly due to its flowing into the plains, without an outlet to the sea , now reaches the Adriatic following the riverbed of the ancient Po di Primaro.
On the bank of the river, we recommend the six-hole course of the Golf Club among low dunes, bushes and groves of native species. < br /> Continue along the embankment road for about 5 km to then take the asphalted road a for Consandolo and Boccaleone, beyond which you reach Argenta, a city & agrave; probably of Roman origins, passed in the Middle Ages from the dominion of the Archbishops of Ravenna to that of the Estensi. Here was born Filippo Jacopo d'Argenta, a miniaturist who collaborated; to the decoration of the fabulous Bible by Borso d'Este, and Giovan Battista Aleotti, architect and engineer active at the Este court.

In the direction of Campotto, you pass in front of the suggestive Pieve di San Giorgio, the most beautiful; ancient of the Ferrara area (6th century) with an admirable marble portal from 1122 on which the months and the work in the fields are represented.
After about 4 km you reach the Oasis in the Argenta and Marmorta valleys, which extends on an area of 1,600 hectares with large lakes surrounded by the typical vegetation of the Po hygrophilous wood, a refuge for many species of animals, especially birds.
In the immediate vicinity there is the Museum of the Valleys which is certainly worth a visit.
